Raasay

Raasay

£600.00

Looking across the Sound of Raasay from Applecross in north west Scotland. The cloud formations roll and change continuously. Sun breaks through, quickly followed by rain showers.

In the 19th century, the brutal Highland Clearances emptied the thriving townships along the Sound. As the emigration ships pulled into the channel, the forced exiles let out a collective, desperate wail of grief that echoed across the water as their homeland shrank behind them.
The famous Raasay-born Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean, immortalised this trauma in his masterpiece, Hallaig. He wrote of the empty coastline not as a wasteland, but as a place where the dead and the cleared still walk. On misty evenings, when the fog rolls heavy over the Sound of Raasay, locals say the water itself seems to hum with the phantom voices of a vanished community, refusing to be forgotten.

73cm x 73cm including bare wood, beech frame.

Painted with acrylic and mixed media and finished with a layer of beeswax - a traditional finish which give the painting surface a slightly satin sheen.

£600 including packaging and delivery within the UK
